Corona Virus Strikes

After reading the article about things that could possible happen as a result of the corona virus, the main thing that stuck out to me was when they said that there would be a holiday about it. It’s probably going to be a holiday that no one takes seriously though, like national girlfriend’s day, or president’s day. But in all seriousness, I don’t agree with most of the things the article said was going to happen.
For one I don’t think people are going to stop gathering in groups, after this is over I believe that a lot is going to go back to normal. I do think there are going to be a boost in germaphobes, but people are going to think that they’re weird kind of like flat earthers. I also think that there are going to be a bunch of health codes implemented into our laws. For example in ways we handle food, I think that part is inevitable. But other than that, the article made points about how religion was going to change because people can’t gather together, and it may be because I live in a town that it hasn’t gotten into yet, but I don’t think that people are going to change how they live over this.
The article also said that people were going to stop spending time on their phones and realize that they can make connections with people instead, and that people were going to have a greater appreciation for their family. This would be nice and all, but to me it’s a weird connection to make to the corona virus. I just don’t see it, people aren’t going to stop being lazy and antisocial. What I know for sure is that most of the things in the article won’t be true for me. I won’t stop giving handshakes, like I won’t be thinking “oh since we just had the corona virus, I shouldn’t be shaking hands”. It just won’t be a thought.
You asked what impact it’s had on me, and like I said, since it hasn’t really hit Langford yet, it hasn’t had an impact on me other than online school. It’s basically like summer, I’ve been going to smith’s weight room every day to either run or work out, I hang out with people, and I’ve taken more hours at my job. The most appreciation I’ve gained is of school, and how much easier it is to learn when you have a teacher.
I have learned some a lot from how people around me act, I never realized how seriously people were taking this until I went to pick up my cap and gown from the school, and I saw 3 teachers standing like 18 feet away from each other in the lunch room having a conversation. At the time I just thought it was funny, but it made me realize that people were actually doing this, and how much worse it must be in cities where people are actually packed together.
Basically I don’t think anything major is going to change about the way people act when this is over, I do think it’s going to be a long process, and probably won’t end until sometime in 2021. But people will slowly start to go back to how things were before it started. I’ll probably have a totally different opinion once I see how people act when it hits Langford though.

Arron Stark

This video made me sad as frick. When Aaron Stark talked about how he smelled because he couldn’t get a shower, it made me think about how you don’t realize what someone else is going through at home even if you think you do. He was just really passionate about what he was talking about and it gave his points more weight. It makes sense that treating a kid as a threat instead of a friend could cause more damage than it could prevent. It’s dope that his friend stuck around long enough for Aaron to realize that what he was planning on doing was wrong, and that friendship lasted a lifetime because he was there in the audience. I was surprised that he’d even started a family after all that, and has 4 kids of his own. It’s probably so comforting for him to know he can parent his own children better than his mom parented him.

5.       It was peaceful
6.       Yes, because there’s a challenge, but also people get mad at each other so
7.       Yes
8.       That everyone does what they think is normal, and doesn’t understand that someone they’re arguing with may be thinking the same thing

Functionalism Blog

What are the groups and what functions do they serve?
The groups are made up of the freaks, who do whatever I guess; the bullies, who let out their insecurities on the geeks, who are punching bags for the bullies. There were also nerds, who were like the wise men of the school.
Who has the power in the episode? How or why do they have power? How do they use it?
The bullies have the power over the geeks, and the counselor has the power over Linsey. The bullies are bigger and the counselor is an adult. And the bullies beat up the geeks and the counselor tries to make Linsey happy.
What are the important symbols in the episode? How do the characters act based on the symbols they find important?
The jacket that Linsey wore, she acts different because her grandma is dead.
Can you relate any of these theories to your own life? How can the things you do be interpreted through one of these theories?
Conflict theory relates to my life because I have to write a 6 page essay in Mrs. Kruger’s class, and it messed up the functionalism in my life. Now I have to write an essay instead of other stuff I’d rather do.

Bloggy Boi

About the video we just watched, I think it’s important for people to learn to think like that. Like you said in class after Timmy said he couldn’t put himself into others shoes, some people can empathize naturally but for others it has to be learned. And I’d never thought about sociological mindfulness in terms of Iraq. He made a good point about how it’s easy to generalize things about America from things like the Christian boot camp and the man who wanted to burn Qurans, and how we could just as easily be generalizing Muslims in the same way, actually I know I’ve generalized Muslims in the same way.
An example of a time I felt sociologically mindful would be when a few years ago the girls were playing volleyball and they were losing 4-20. So I put it on my story because it was 420 and didn’t really think about anyone being mad about it. Later on the blonde in our class texted me to take it down and yelled at me, and at the time I thought she was just a nag. Eventually I learned that I hadn’t put myself in her shoes and I probably shouldn’t have put it up in the first place.
Somebody I would like to add to the 10 acts of courage that changed to world list would be Mr. Beast. Last year he planted 20 million trees by starting an organization and everyone who donated a dollar got a tree planted.
I see myself fitting into the big picture of society by eventually going to college, and once I get a job working my way up the chain of engineering until I either have an idea to event something or I can start my own company. Then I’ll work non-stop until I have become the next Elon Musk. My main goal is to leave a lasting change on the world.

A small electrical zap to the brain could help you retrieve a forgotten memory

Researchers at UCLA found out during an experiment that stimulating the left side of the prefrontal cortex can help you to retrieve memories. This leads them to believe that this area of the brain is responsible for accessing knowledge and making decisions about it.
The psychologists conducted their experiment on 3 groups that each contained 13 women and 11 men, whose average age was 20. Each person was shown 80 words on a computer screen, and wore a device that sent a weak electrical current to the left side of the prefrontal cortex, and then had to try and remember as many as they could.
During the first half of the study everyone was given a fake stimulation, where the researchers gave them a small stimulation but then turned off the electrical current so that there would be no effect on the person. And the psychologists noted that there were no differences between the 3 group’s results after they were given the test. For the second half of the test, the first group was given a current that excited the neurons in the prefrontal cortex, the second group was given a current that suppressed it, and the third group was given the fake stimulation.
The group who received the current that excited the prefrontal cortex scored an average of 15.4 points higher than they did when they got the fake stimulation. The group that received the fake stimulation had their scores go up by about 2 points. This showed that this technology could be used to help improve brain function in the future,
